Finding Peace in a Turbulent Political World: Trusting God's Sovereignty
We live in a time when political unrest seems to dominate our lives. Every news headline screams of division, instability, and uncertainty. It’s easy to become frustrated, even fearful, about the direction things are heading. Politicians on all sides promise solutions to the world's problems, yet peace and unity seem further away than ever.
But as followers of Christ, we are called to a higher perspective. Our hope is not in the hands of any man or woman, any political party, or government system. Instead, our hope rests in the unshakable sovereignty of God. He sees the end from the beginning, and He holds the world—and every nation—within His hands.
Each morning as I start my day, I see my kids laughing and playing, full of joy, with no real worry on their minds. It’s such a peaceful moment, a reminder of the beauty and simplicity of life when you trust completely. It always brings me back to what Jesus said in Matthew 18:3: "Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven." Children naturally trust their parents; they don’t carry the weight of the world on their shoulders.
But then, like many of us do, I open my social media or turn on the news. It doesn’t take long before the worries of the world flood in—chaos, division, and fear grip the headlines. It’s such a stark contrast to the carefree world my children live in. And in those moments, I have to remind myself that God is calling me to trust Him the same way my kids trust me—without doubt or fear.
The Bible reminds us in Isaiah 46:9-10, “I am God, and there is none like me, declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose.’” God’s plan is unfolding, even in the midst of political chaos. He’s not surprised or overwhelmed by what’s happening—He’s in control.
In this season, it’s important that we, as Christians, resist the temptation to place our hope in a political leader. Throughout history, God’s people have struggled with this. In the Old Testament, Israel constantly sought out human kings and rulers to guide them, forgetting that God was their true King. In Psalm 146:3-4, we are warned, "Do not put your trust in princes, in human beings, who cannot save. When their spirit departs, they return to the ground; on that very day their plans come to nothing."
If our hope is in a human leader, we will always be disappointed. People are fallible, and no leader can ever perfectly align with God’s kingdom or bring about lasting peace. Instead, God calls us to focus on pleasing Him, not on aligning with the ever-shifting values of this world.
In Colossians 3:1-2, Paul urges us, “Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.” This doesn’t mean we ignore the issues around us or stop engaging in our communities. But our ultimate aim is to please God, not to fit into the world’s mold or place all our hopes in human solutions. Our citizenship is in heaven, and we are called to live as ambassadors of Christ, no matter what happens politically.
So, how do we navigate these times? First, we must ground ourselves in prayer and Scripture. In prayer, we align our hearts with God's will and seek His peace that surpasses all understanding. Through Scripture, we are reminded of His promises and His ultimate control.
Second, we need to focus on being the salt and light Jesus calls us to be. In a world that seems to thrive on division, fear, and anger, we are called to be different. We can offer hope and peace that comes from the unchanging truth of God’s Word. Our calling is not to join the shouting matches or align ourselves with worldly agendas but to show the love of Christ, no matter who is in power.
Lastly, we should be diligent in reminding others that our hope is not in this world or in its leaders. We have a Savior who has already won the victory. Jesus said, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). There is no election, no political shift, and no world event that can take away the victory we have in Christ.
Let us stay focused on pleasing God, trusting that He has a perfect plan for this world. His will is being accomplished, even when we can’t see it. Instead of getting caught up in the political chaos, let’s fix our eyes on the One who reigns eternally.
Remember, God is sovereign, and nothing is outside of His control. Let’s put our faith and trust in Him alone, for He is the only one who holds the future.
